It's hardly news that York is full of delights - that why it's the most visited place outside the capital. This makes it perfect for some indulgent time with your camera.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the 1 to 1 session on Sunday.
I have learnt such a lot in the space of a few hours, particularly about exposure compensation and the use of ISO settings.
I would love to come on the day course after Xmas.
Once again many thanks, look forward to hearing from you if you want to see the results of your tuition."

So you bought yourself a digital SLR, or if you're really lucky, someone else bought you one. You clearly want more than just snapshots. so how to go about it?

You could:

photography tuition

Tuition days include the essential theory you need to start taking control of your photo. Then we head out to put practice into theory, to give you the chance to experiment with what you've learnt. we'll then head back to look through your photos, and demonstrate some editing techniques.

"As someone with an interest in taking better photos and wanting to learn about SLR cameras I found that this day was very useful. It was an informal and relaxed day and paul made me feel welcome and was able to adjust to my needs as well as others who had more experience than me. I learnt a lot with a good balance between theory and practice. I particularly enjoyed going out in York to practice and get the guidance as you were taking the photos. Additionally I enjoyed looking at the photos back at the classroom for a review of the photos taken. Overall I found Paul to be approachable and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend this workshop for those interested in taking better photos and increasing their knowledge of SLR cameras."

We'll go off the beaten track - away from the hoards, but at your own pace - no pressure. Our training days are informal and relaxed.

For weekend workshops, we have a choice of locations further afield, such as Dalby Forest, which offers a chance to shoot not only nature, but adrenaline sports as well.

We start the day by looking through some of your photos. We will also look through a selection of our photos, to explain how and why they've been taken.

We cover the theory you need to know to get your camera off Auto, and start being creative. This includes:

We then head out to put theory into practice.

After a few hours shooting (with drink stops when needed!), we return indoors to review your work.

Don't own a DSLR? You can hire one of ours!

Bestside Photography offers tuition specifically tailored to owners of DSLRs, who wish to find out how to take more creative and rewarding photos.

These 1 and 2 day courses are very hands-on, giving you the basic information you need.  this level of informmation takes months or even years of reading books and magazines.

Courses are based at our York studio.

We spend the morning discussing the basic theory - focusing, exposure, and composition.  This is done in a user-friendly way, not over-technical.

We will analyse a selection of photos (you can bring some with you), to see where improvements could be made.

In the afternoon, we are joined by an experienced model.  Using our lights and triggers, you will learn how to take studio photos, in a friendly, supportive environment.  You will take away photos better than you thought possible.

1 day courses cost £95.  Groups are limited to just 4 people, to ensure a friendly environment, and plenty of time behind the camera. When the evenings are lighter, you can opt to stay for a session of night shooting in York.  We'll show you the techniques used to capture atmospheric low-light photos.

1 to 1 tuition, including studio time if required, is available throughout the year at very competative rates.
